Automotive Service Technology at Cleveland High School


Transportation Core
A 1 credit class in the basics of working in an automotive shop and foundational skills for automotive service. Available to students in grades 9-12 and there are no prerequisites to enroll. Students must demonstrate the ability to work safely in an automotive shop by passing the safety exam with a 100% accuracy within three attempts in order to stay in the class.

Brakes
A 1 credit comprehensive brake service and repair class for students in grades 10-12. Students enrolling must have passed Transportation Core with a "C" or better grade, they must also have passed or be currently enrolled in Algebra.

Steering and Suspension
A 1 credit comprehensive steering and suspension service and repair class for students in grades 10-12. Students enrolling must have passed Transportation Core with a "C" or better grade, they must also have passed or be currently enrolled in Algebra.

Engine Performance
A 2 credit comprehensive engine performance class for students in grades 10-12. Students enrolling must have passed Transportation Core with a "C" or better grade, they must also have passed or be currently enrolled in Algebra. It is preferred, but not required,  that the student have completed automotive electrical and electronics.

Electrical and Electronics
A 2 credit comprehensive electrical and electronics service and repair class for students in grades 10-12. Students enrolling must have passed Transportation Core with a "C" or better grade, they must also have passed or be currently enrolled in Algebra.

Advanced Engine Performance
A 1 credit, largely independent study, class designed to allow a student to develop a hypothesis about engine performance enhancement and then test the theory through modifications to a test-bed vehicle. Students must be seniors who have successfully completed Transportation Core, Brakes, Engine Performance, Suspension and Steering, and Electrical and Electronics. The student must also receive a favorable recommendation from the course instructor prior to enrolling.

Automotive Internship
A 1 credit work-study experience designed for seniors who have successfully completed Transportation Core, Brakes, Engine Performance, Suspension and Steering, and Electrical and Electronics. Students must have a favorable recommendation from the course instructor and acceptance as an intern in an approved local repair facility prior to enrolling. The student must be prepared to provide their own transportation to and from the job site and continually meet the requirements of the job site.
